Boxing: Puja moves into semis


Coimbatore: Puja Bahera of Jharkhand continued with her winning ways, drubbing Renuka Sonwani of Chhattisgarh in the 40 kg weight category in 14-year age group on day two of the 2nd Sub-junior women’s national boxing championship and JCT College of Engineering in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu on Monday.
Puja quickly amassed a four-point lead after the first round and held on to secure a berth in the semi-finals with an 11:7 victory.

Nisha Jatav of Madhya Pradesh was unrelenting as she marched into the semi-finals with another resounding victory with the referee having to stop the fight. In the quarters, Jatav, a gold medallist at the 1st Sub-junior women’s national boxing championship was up against local girl K.Nivetha in the 42 kilogram weight class of the 14 year old age group. She was leading 6:4 in the second round when the referee intervened to stop the contest and hand Jatav the victory.
The 36 kilogram weight class of the 13 year old age group witnessed some riveting action with Ritika of Delhi and Preeti Kumari of Jharkhand advancing to the next round with contrasting wins. While Ritika plundered her way into the semis with a 10:5 win over L.Pavithra of Tamil Nadu, Preeti had to dig deep against Sujata of Haryana. After three rounds (1.5 minutes each) of seesaw battle, Preeti won on individual judge’s score. Usha Rani Vankayala of Andhra Pradesh too made her place in the last four beating Puspanjali Behera of Orissa in a lopsided contest. She won 11:6 on points.
The 2nd edition of the tournament will continue to provide emerging boxers an excellent platform to improve their level of performance and will also serve as a selection ground for top pugilists to make a cut in to the Indian camp.
